Bug Friendly Teacher Gets An Award
Jupiter Kalambakal - AHN News Writer Los Angeles, CA (AHN)-- An elementary school teacher from Eagle Rock is set to receive the "Compassionate Teacher Award" from an international animal rights organization for her be-kind-to-bugs strategy in class. Melodie Conrad of Eagle Rock Elementary School & Magnet Center has become an instant celebrity after receiving praise from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals or PETA for her "student insect-monitor" idea. The student insect-monitor works pretty much the same as monitors for the hallways, chalkboards and classroom windows. If any creepy-crawler wanders into the classroom, the student bug monitor swoops in with a paper towel or napkin, scoops up the critter and shepherds it outside. Conrad was quick to note that she's not out to create bug activists, just aiming to instill in her young wards a sense of respect for life, and hopefully, a non-violent temperament. PETA's Sangeeta Kumar supports the efforts of teachers like Conrad. The group believes that "children who respect and protect the smallest and most maligned among us, you can help create better citizens who have compassion for others." Kumar adds that in the wake of tragedies such as the Columbine High School shooting in 1999 - in which the two students who killed a dozen teens and a teacher had a history of torturing animals - America's consciousness is shifting toward more socially responsible efforts, from recycling to caring about endangered species. |
